Desert X

Weaving Histories (2026-2027)

Desert X is produced by The Desert Biennial, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization founded in California, conceived to create and present international contemporary art exhibitions that engage with desert environments through site-specific installations by acclaimed artists from around the world.

Weaving Histories is a collaborative, community-centered social practice art project developed in partnership with Desert X's Arts Education program and local artist Adriana Lopez-Ospina. Students will be engaged in the creation of a large-scale, site-specific public art installation that reflects the multi-layered identities, stories, and lived experiences of the community. Through a series of workshops and in-class visits, students at Indio High School will learn foundational and experimental weaving techniques while exploring storytelling through alternative forms such as pattern, form and material. This project is to emphasize workforce development by introducing students to pathways in the arts by giving them the experience of producing, collaborating, and witnessing the creation of a public installation.
